Understanding radon treatment: Get your home inspected

For the unversed, radon is a radioactive gas that’s produced due to decaying of uranium in nature. Uranium can be found in almost all types of soils. Radon gas can get into homes through cracks, gaps, and holes in the foundation and walls. If the gas remains trapped, one can be exposed to higher levels of radon. Radon exposure is one of the leading causes of lung cancer-related deaths in the US among nonsmokers. In this post, we are discussing facts related to radon treatment for your home.

Inspection for homes

There are radon mitigators, who offer inspection at affordable prices. They can test your home for presence of radon gas, and as needed, they would recommend the mitigation options. There are radon reduction systems that can be used, depending on the type of house you have. Inspections should be done at least once every two years. It is a common myth that higher levels of radon gas in homes are only found in selected states, regions or areas. If the tests find the radon levels to be 4 pCi/L or more, you will need to consider professional treatment.

How is radon treatment done?

There are many known services that offer radon treatment for residential clients. The approach may vary between professional radon mitigators. Some focus on just preventing radon from getting inside the house, while others use methods that allow the gas to vent out. Ideally, a mix of the two is what you’re wanting. The foremost task is to seal all gaps, holes, and cracks that may allow radon to pass into your home. There are also sub-slab depressurization systems, which basically involve using pipes and an exhaust fan, which allows the gas to pass, instead of making its way into your house.

How much does radon treatment cost?

The cost of radon treatment typically depends on the solutions offered. You can expect to get an estimate in advance. If a sub-slab depressurization system is being installed, you may have to pay more. The good news is such systems can be installed, without any structural changes to your property. In other words, you don’t have to spend extensively to address radon levels.

Don’t delay in calling the experts for a radon treatment. This is a matter of your family’s health and safety, and you cannot afford to take risks with radioactive gas.
